consulate. alex savidge joins us from uc berkeley with more. >> reporter: good morning. the u.s. ambassador to libya that was killed in that attack grew up here in northern california. he graduated from uc berkeley back in 1982. after that he received a degree from uc hastings college of law. according to libyan officials chris stevens and three other embassy employees were killed in an attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. shooting employees and set fire to the building as well. they are all angry over a viral video that mocks mohammed. he went to the consulate and was trying to evacuate staff members. this is after the building came

after attack. now at this point this morning, the state department is not confirming that stevens has been killed. but they are not giving many details on that particular attack. only saying one person was killed in the attack. waiting for more details throughout the morning. alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. now just a short time ago, president obama released a statement it says in part quote i strongly condemn the outrainous attack on our diplomatic facility in beanos which took -- benghazi is which took the lives of several people. in other overnight news a person in a wheelchair was among the tenants evacuated from a burning apartment in the east bay. tara moriarty is in alameda this morning where an investigation into the fire is now under way. >> reporter: investigators

don't know if this fire broke out on the inside or outside of the home. if you take a look behind me you can see where most of the damage is there and the flames broke out on the backside of the house. the emergency call came in around 1:00 this morning. 15 people were forced out of the four plex and took more than two dozen firefighters an hour to squelch the flames. when firefighters arrived they told them someone was still inside the building. >> when we came in the captain was carrying that person out of the building. when we ran in there was additional people coming out and said there might be other people trapped. >> reporter: firefighters were able to keep the damage contained to the one house. residents will not be allowed back inside. red cross is on scene. live in alameda i'm tara

moriarty. a dispute near golden gate park sent one man to the hospital last night. that happened just before 11:00 p.m. on 41st avenue and fulton street. the argument include two men. one hit the other on the head with the flashlight. the stables condition is not life threatening. in just a few hours apple is expected to make a big announcement about the iphone right here in san francisco. it will be made at the center. the iphone five is rumored to have a larger display, new connector, and 4g connectivity. the iphone five could go on sale as early as today. apple also rumored to announce new ipods. 4:33 is the time right now. family and friends are remembering a college student from the bay area that drowned on the sacramento river.

>> we are utterly grief stricken at the loss of my dear boy brett. >> at least 1,000 people attended a solemn memorial last night. the to-year-old's body was recovered along the sacramento river on sunday. he had been missing for a week after going tubing down the river on the labor day weekend. >> i'm just shocked about this whole thing. about how this played out. i know i was really positive. everyone was positive about trying to find him. >> brett olson was a student at cal polly. he graduated from acalanes high school in 2010. reverend jerald lynn yard is facing perjury charges for

lying under oath. lynch was acquitted for beating up lynn yard. during the trial he took the stand and denied the mullation charge -- molestation charges. they say he should face some type of punishment. former students of san jose bella mean high school are getting letter warning them about sexual abuse. a 1968 graduate cames he was abused when he was a student. they are considering it a credible claim and sending letters to students who attended the school between 1964 and 1974. the alleged abuser also taught

at joe wit high. emotions ran high during a council meeting last night involving several officer involved shootings. >> about 200 people attended the hearing. they demanded the city take action. there have been zone officer involved shootings since may. five of them were fatal. one of the speakers was the mother of mario romero. 23-year-old that was gunned down at the beginning of the month. >> my son was somebody also. >> vallejo mayor ozzy davis added cities to the family and added it was not his intention to appear to take sides in the case. the romero's family wants to meet with officers to discuss

the case. independent agency outside of solano county. citizens advisory meeting was canceled monday night due to public outbursts. we are learning about the man that shot and killed a chp officer. some of the items seized from christopher lacy. the number of home burglaries in palo alto continue to rise despite warnings by police to lock doors and windows. that is the highest number in five years. now police say the method of entry unlocked doors and window. there is a few -- unlocked homes will always be the first target. 4:37 is the time. federal investigators say the walls of a pipe that triggered last months fire was dangerously thin. the contra costa times reports

investigators found parts of the pipe had bent to just 1/16 of an inch. six refinery workers sustained minor injuries in the august 6th fire. more than 15,000 people went to the hospital with respiratory problems. in election 2012 news this morning the candidates are back on the campaign trail after taking a day off to mark the september 11th anniversary. president obama is heading to nevada today where he plans to question why mitt romney and paul ryan refused to tell voters how they would pay for tax cuts for the wealthy. in florida romney is is expected to argue the nation's debt is delaying job creations and economic growth. both candidates for vice president will campaign in ohio. 4:38 is the time. let's go back to sal to check in on traffic.

hi sal. >> hi, pam. traffic is off to a decent start this morning. on this wednesday. we are doing pretty well with no major problems. we will check out the east shore freeway now. it's a little bit overcast. we can't see as far as you normally can. you can see traffic is moving along pretty well. bay bridge toll plaza is light. no problems here getting into san francisco. the drive across the bridge looks good. all the way into the city. and if you are driving in san jose northbound 280 that looks clear. 280 traffic not only that but the weather looks good here as well. let's go to steve. >> sal, thank you. a very good morning. we have a big difference in temps. there is low 90s well inland. 60s by the coast. it looks like a little stronger sea breeze. fire storms firing up. so probably repeat performance. still the warm air aloft is capping some of that fog. some of it is thick. it's still there. the low overcast is with us nights and mornings.

50s on the temps. however they do have a west, southwest 17. i have seen gusts to 20 which is a little stronger than yesterday. it looks like a very similar pattern today. slightly cooler. kind of a bigger fog bank. we are caught between systems. fog, sun, nice. warm for some. maybe hot for others. cool, breezy at times. we get that 60 to it degrees. little warmer on thursday, friday, into saturday. 4:40 is the time right now. las vegas is dealing with heavy flooding but that is not all. the new concerns that are forcing dozens of people out of their homes this morning. plus the renovation plan for the next month that could close the entire san mateo bridge for two weekends. good morning. 680 southbound the traffic is moving along pretty well if you are driving down to the bottom of the bay.

good morning. plenty of low clouds and fog out there. very close to what we had yesterday. 60s by the coast. near 90 for some well inland. 45 homes are under evacuation orders in las vegas because of heavy flooding. the concern now is that the flood waters may have damaged the electrical systems in those homes and that could now spark fires. water levels are several feet high in some of the areas. yesterday 20 people had to be rescued from cars that were stranded in the rising water. the same storm system also caused flooding and the evacuation of 80 people in river side county. this morning we are learning new information about a robbery at a 7-eleven in milpitas where a night clerk was killed.

police released this picture of one of the three suspects where you can clearly see his face there. the other two suspects have covered their faces. milpitas police say the three men robbed the store early saturday morning and shot and killed the night clerk mohammed raza. 7-eleven is offering a $10,000 reward leading to arrest and conviction. we also have new information about the gunman that killed a chp officer in alamo. detective seized items including a handgun -- six computers and $600 cash. now lacy shot officer -- moodies is threatening to

cut the nation's credit rating. the agency says the nation could lose the aaa rating if a deal is not reached by the end of next year. its rival stripped the rating last year. without a budget deal more than $1 trillion in tax increases and spending cuts will go into effect in january which could send the economy back into a recession. facebook ceo mark zuckerberg talked about his company's missteps. he used the two-day conference to make his first public comment since facebook ipo back in may. he also tried to are assure investors. >> we zuckerberg says facebook's future will rely on

nicely. no problems getting into san francisco. and in the south bay coming in from last georgia -- los gatos to san jose it's a nice looking drive. on the peninsula 180 is off to a nice start. 4:48 let's go to steve. thank you. not much is changing here. there are signs next week of a very strong system dropping in the middle of the country. extremely cold air. but the loft coast and right coast look to be rather quiet here. slightly warmer tomorrow. we'll take that into friday. it looks like saturday is that betweener day. sunday will be a little cooler. i don't think the coast will change that much. i mean we are just stuck. stuck. thunderstorms from the sierra nevada all the way down to las vegas into fee notion. 50s to almost 60 degrees.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. it's day three of the chicago teacher strike. negotiators will return to negotiations this morning with a new proposal from the school board. two sticking points remain,

teacher performance evaluations and allowing laid off teachers to get their jobs back. teachers have been on the picket line since monday leaving about 400,000 students out of class. back here in the bay area city college of san francisco students shut down last nights school board meeting. they angry the board brought in a state advisor so oversee the money issues. san francisco police made more than two dozen drug related raids. they conducted under cover drug buys within 1,000 feet of campuses hoping to send a message. >> with a purpose to send a message that we want you to stay away from our school zones. we don't want you to target any of our kids in san francisco.
